Gold Leaf

Gold leafing, or "gilding", involves the application of 23 karat gold leaf to weathervanes, domes, crosses, and clock face components.  The process starts with meticulous surface preparation to remove the old finish and clean the surface.  After coating the items with the proper primer and finish products, a slow "size" is applied to accept the new leaf.  The slow size provides for both strong adhesion and a brilliant luster.  A properly gold leafed weathervane will maintain its luster for upwards of twenty years.
